A town to relax on thermal waters
La Fortuna is a charming little town located in the Alajuela Province, about 4 miles (6.4 km) from the Arenal Volcano. It is situated around 16 miles (26 km) from Ciudad Quesada and 75 miles (120 km) from San Jose. Because of the curvy roads it may take around 3 hours to get from San Jose to La Fortuna. The climate is very variable, it oscillates between 21°C and 27.5°C. The rainy season lasts from May to January, while the dry season runs from February to April.
The Arenal Volcano is located in the west side of La Fortuna de San Carlos, in the Alajuela Province. It includes the Arenal Volcano and the Chato Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is 1.633 meters high, with an almost perfectly conical shape. It has a crater on the summit of 140 meters deep. Arenal Volcano National Park provides a beautiful view of the active volcano and its current eruptions.
The park has short trails which pass through young secondary forest and old lava fields from large previous eruptions. The park is part of the Arenal Conservation Area, which stretches 200.000 hectares.
Among the highlights of the Arenal Volcano area include: hot springs, lush forest, volcanic scenery especially at night with red hot rocks exploding out of the cone, a beautiful waterfall and many different species of flora and fauna.
The Arenal Volcano is the main touristic attraction of La Fortuna, although you can find a wide range of activities to enjoy in the area, including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, hiking, canopy tours, cave explorations, and more. Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, and since July 29, 1968. Lake Arenal, which rests at the base of the Arenal Volcano, is a manmade lake, where many touristic and economic activities take place.
