For the soft hiker or the very advance one,Costa Rica has so many trails it is impossible to hike them all. Hiking is a bigactivity in the country, not only for visitors but for weekend trips for nationals too. Besides the 26 National Parks, numerous natural private reserves, botanic gardens, and localforest parks, there are many country side routes that lead to beutiful waterfalls.

There are so many small local hikes that lead to the local attractions, such as waterfalls, river pools, ancient trees, archeological treasures and beautiful landscapes.

  • La Fortuna - Arenal

A town to relax on thermal waters

La Fortuna is a charming little town located in the Alajuela Province, about 4 miles (6.4 km) from the Arenal Volcano. It is situated around 16 miles (26 km) from Ciudad Quesada and 75 miles (120 km) from San Jose. Because of the curvy roads it may take around 3 hours to get from San Jose to La Fortuna. The climate is very variable, it oscillates between 21°C and 27.5°C. The rainy season lasts from May to January, while the dry season runs from February to April.

The Arenal Volcano is located in the west side of La Fortuna de San Carlos, in the Alajuela Province. It includes the Arenal Volcano and the Chato Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is 1.633 meters high, with an almost perfectly conical shape. It has a crater on the summit of 140 meters deep. Arenal Volcano National Park provides a beautiful view of the active volcano and its current eruptions.

The park has short trails which pass through young secondary forest and old lava fields from large previous eruptions. The park is part of the Arenal Conservation Area, which stretches 200.000 hectares.

Among the highlights of the Arenal Volcano area include: hot springs, lush forest, volcanic scenery especially at night with red hot rocks exploding out of the cone, a beautiful waterfall and many different species of flora and fauna.

The Arenal Volcano is the main touristic attraction of La Fortuna, although you can find a wide range of activities to enjoy in the area, including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, hiking, canopy tours, cave explorations, and more. Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, and since July 29, 1968. • Scuba Diving

    Two Great Scuba Diving Sites

The waters in Costa Rica are not very clear for snorkeling. There are only a couple of very good spots where people could enjoy beautiful coral reefs. One of those spots is Cahuita National Park. Specifically for scuba diving, the two best sports in the country are: Caño Island and Coco`s Island. Some other spots are Playas del Coco and Monkey Head, and Cahuita.

Coco`s Island is knonw internationally for its shark population. The only way to visit the island is on a private cruise on a 7 days period. On the other hand, Caño Island is visited for its beutiful tropical marine life in turquois waters. It also has a very interesting archeological site.
